The Power of Teamwork

Do you think about your business first thing in the morning before you even get up?  Is your goal for the day what makes you get out of bed?  Then you’re probably an entrepreneur.

Do you fall asleep listening to a ceiling fan and hearing a song in the sound it makes?  Do you hear music in every situation?  Then you are an artist.

And whether you are an entrepreneur, an artist, or a business owner, one of the hardest lessons to learn is teamwork.  I have the right to say that…I’m a self-employed entrepreneur, and I speak from experience.  Nowhere in school, at least not when I was Successin college (and granted, that was lightyears ago), did they teach students on the subject I am going to cover in this blog, and yet I believe it is one of the most important lesson one has to learn in order to be successful in business.  And it’s worth repeating – regardless of whether you are an entrepreneur, business owner, or artist, this blog is relevent to you.  Artists don’t always think of themselves as business owners, and that is something I have discussed with quite a few artists, but you are.  If your music is your career, then it is your business.  And as a business owner, this blog is important to you.

As entrepreneurs and artists, we are very passionate about what we do.  It’s different than having a 9 to 5 job working for someone else and creating their dream.  Our work is who we are…it’s what drives us.  It’s what wakes us up in the morning.  It’s what we talk about the most.  It is what determines what kind of relationships we have.  Many of, and sometimes ALL of our decisions throughout the day are made around our work.  And that’s not necessarily a bad thing if handled in a positive way – but I’ll save that discussion for another blog.  But it’s not a bad thing.  In fact, I happen to LOVE to work with entrepreneurs and artists BECAUSE of that passion and zeal for life and work.  They are inspiring.  They are determined.  And they typically just don’t let things get them down.  One thing for sure – you DON’T tell them “it can’t be done”!

But, back to teamwork…
The very characteristics that I just described also often times become our greatest challenge.  The fact that we are so passionate about our work, the fact that we are so emotionally invested in our work, the very fact that our work is so much of who we are makes it very, very difficult for us to “share” – in fact, it can feel like it is almost impossible.  We have a hard time giving up the reigns.  It is incredibly hard for us to let someone else take over a segment of our businesses and to hand over control.  It feels unnatural, it feels like it goes against everything we believe in, and it is as scary as __________ (you can fill in the blank).  The hardest thing for an entrepreneur or artist to do is trust someone else with any aspect of their business.  And that is because that business is our dream.  It is our vision.  It is our baby!  If an artist writes a song, he has poured out his heart and soul into that song.  If an entrepreneur starts a business, he has probably set aside everything else, and even gambled with everything else, in order to make that business happen.  And nothing was more exciting than when that business or song came to life.  So now to trust a portion of it to someone else is really difficult.

But this is what I tell clients – you can’t be an expert at everything.  If you tell yourself you are, you’d better be careful.  I don’t want to go to a doctor who tells me that he is an expert at everything, because I won’t trust him.  If I need to go to the doctor because I have a heart issue, you’d better believe that I am going to go to a specialist!  Well, we need to give our businesses the same kind of care.  If we hang on to all aspects of our business and insist on doing it all by ourselves and on retaining control of everything, our business is going to suffer.   It won’t reach it’s full potential.  It won’t grow as it should.  It is really important to pay attention to your business by providing it the care it needs and deserves.  And the way to do that, while in principle is simple, putting it into action is not simple.  What I tell most clients that are having trouble with their businesses is this: “Take the time to build relationships.  Find people you really trust.  Hire experts you really trust, let them take over the things in your business that you are not an expert at, and you do what is your expertise and passion.”  It is important to hire people with the mindset of getting to really know and trust them and let them take over areas of your business that you need help with.

Because I have seen this as a common problem among clients, I have created mastermind groups that are designed for entrepreneurs and artists and their unique needs.  Our mastermind groups are put together in a format that provides individualized guidance to each member, and creates strong relationships built on trust, a common mindset, and a desire to support each other’s businesses.  The beauty of surrounding yourself with other business owners and learning to know and trust them, to share your expertise with them and have them do the same for you, is that you find that it opens up amazing doors.  Every person in the group will have a different background, different experiences, different training, and different strengths.  And so as you share your business concerns, every person in the group will consider the concerns from a different perspective.  In the mastermind groups, you will build a team that will focus on building your business and provide you with expertise that you don’t have, and you will have the opportunity to do the same for each of them.  And that is powerful!  As entrepreneurs and artists, we tend to be “tunnel visioned” – we are so close to the problem that it is hard to see the right steps to take to overcome the problem.  So it is absolutely amazing and so exciting to watch what happens when you put a group of 12 passionate business owners together, sit one of them down, have him share is concerns, listen to the other 11 members give input, and watch everything come together.  So often you will hear “I never would have thought of that!” or “How in the world did I miss that?!” and you will always here “Wow!  Thank you so much everyone!”  12 heads really is better than 1!

I am so excited to announce that plans are in the works to bring the popular Highway 2 Success Talk Show back to Indie 104! Due to health issues beyond my control, I had to make the very difficult decision to leave radio last year, but my goal has always been to get to the point where I could come back…and I’m finally ready! And Here Comes 2015!

Highway 2 Success

As the year comes to a close I, like most people, find myself looking at this past year and being grateful that I made some good decisions, and also wishing I had done some things differently.  Like everyone else, I have perfect 20/20 hindsight vision.

2014, I will admit, was a challenging year.  I dealt with some serious health issues, had to move several times (and we all know how stressful moving is!), had to give up the radio show that I loved so much due to the health issues (and yes, I WILL be back soon!), and had several real hoops to jump through.  But sometimes life does that to us.  I can say as I look back at it that I see some great lessons that came out of it, I was able to help some people in ways that I never could have otherwise, and as always there was a reason for things happening as they did.

However, it’s also a fact that while we can’t do a thing about the days behind us, I shared a link to an article yesterday that gave some very simple, basic, but positive steps that I can take in 2015 in order to be more successful.  It’s interesting how some of the hardest habits to form are actually some of the most basic.  For example, for me one of the things I need to work on is getting more rest.  I’m a workaholic.  I love to work.  I feel guilty if I’m not “accomplishing something”.  So I have a difficult time setting aside time to rest, and to have “me time”.

One of the nice things about the new year is that it gives us all a feeling of being handed a clean slate.  It’s a “start over moment”.  It’s another chance to do better.  I for one am so thankful for the things in life that let me feel like I am being offered a new beginning.  I think they’re exciting.  It gives me a chance to sit down and make my goals and plans for the next season…to create new dreams.

My biggest resolution for 2015 is to start taking more “me time”, because I know it will make me more productive and focused.  It’s been proven over and over that we need rest and down time in order to really reach our potential.  I realized in the last few weeks how little time I have where I am not working on something, trying to figure something out, or trying to solve a problem for myself or someone else.  I realized how little time I spend just reading a good book, or going for a walk with my dog.  So I’ve made myself a promise to start making time to myself more of a priority and to retrain myself into accepting non-productive time as okay.

On the flip side of that coin, I also spent some time really going through what I want to accomplish with my business, setting some goals, and writing out the steps I need to take to accomplish those goals.  It’s always good to write things out so that you can revisit them during the year.  Personally, it helps me stay focused, and it keeps my dreams alive.

Changes!

It has been a really wonderfully wild ride since we began the
H2S webartHighway 2 Success Show just shy of a year ago!  It’s been fun to watch it grow and evolve.When we first started to air the show, it was originally to be a show about social media marketing for artists. But as we did the show, we found that there was so much more that we could offer to artists that would help them to achieve success, and I found it hard to limit it to social media marketing.  So we decided to expand our horizons a little, and bring various experts in all areas of business on to the show to provide support to artists.

Eventually, because we were talking to a wide range of professionals, we found that business owners began listening and requesting specific information.

So that is where we are today.  It has been an exciting journey, and I’m sure it will continue changing, but I’m sure that all our listeners will really enjoy the new format.  We are still providing tools and support to artists, but we will be doing it in a way that it also is profitable to anyone in business.  As of last week, we began using the Indie104 chat room during our shows so that our listeners could ask our guests questions, and we’re working on a brand new website!

Bump It!

Need people to read your post?  Bump it!  I get asked frequently how often one should post, what one should post,and how to get a post read.  It’s a fair question, since that is really what social media marketing is all about.  After all, if no one is reading what you are posting, you aren’t getting much done!  So today I’m going to tell you how to add new life to those posts that have lost their “zip”.

Facebook uses a formula called Edgerank.  For those of you who have neverheard of it, it’s a process by which Facebook decides how active your post is.  If your post is really active, then it moves up in the News Feeds, thereby giving people a better chance of finding and reading it.  So, the goal then, is to keep your post active in the News Feed.  Recently Facebook has made some changes very positive changes to how all of this works.  Here’s some interesting statistics from Facebook…

“Previously, people read 57% of the stories in their News Feeds, on average. They did not scroll far enough to see the other 43%. When the unread stories were resurfaced, the fraction of stories read increased to 70%.”

So what does all of this mean to you?  Well, the changes Facebook has made allow you to change how your posts show up in News Feeds in order for you to get your posts read.  The process of taking your posts that are buried way down the list in a News Feed and getting them back up at the top of the list is called “bumping”.  And with the new changes Facebook has made, bumping your posts is not only possible, but also fairly easy to do!

The activity your post gets is what makes your post bump back up to the top of the News Feeds. So once your post is no longer easily accessible in a News Feed, the way to bumping it back up to the top is to get it active again.  Some ways of doing this are:

Ask your friends to like, share, or comment on the post.
Ask a question about the post and get people talking about it again.
Mention something that currently happened that relates to the post, and get attention to it.
Say something funny about the post to create new activity.

But the bottom line is that if you find creative ways of getting that post active again, it will bump back up to the top of the News Feeds.  And based on Facebook’s statistics the fraction of resurfaced stories that was read was very high!  So try doing this with some of your stale posts, and let us know how it works for you! In fact, if you have a post you want to bump, let us help you.  Just give us as much information as you can about the post so that we can find it (and be sure you are corresponding to us from the same Facebook page that the post is on, so that we are looking on the right page!), and we will go to the post and comment, share, or like it for you (or maybe even all three!).  And keep in mind, when we do that, all the people who have liked our page will get notification of it, so you will get new people coming to your page.  That’s what social media marketing is all about!
